Trading Psychology
The battle is in your mind. The best strategy fails without psychological discipline.
This hub covers the mental game — from controlling emotions to building unshakable habits.
Core Issues
Fear
Fear stops traders more than any other emotion.
Fear Types
| Fear | Effect | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Fear of losing | Avoid valid trades | Accept losses as cost |
| Fear of being wrong | Exit early | Some trades will be wrong |
| Fear of missing out | Chase entries | Wait for your setup |
| Fear of taking loss | Move stops | Accept it |
Fear in Action
Fear → Don't enter → No trade → No loss
→ But also no profit
The fix: Enter with risk defined. Accept the loss possibility.
Greed
Greed destroys accounts faster than losses.
Greed Types
| Greed | Effect | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Want more | Overstay winners | Take profit at target |
| Larger size | Over-risk | Follow sizing rules |
| More trades | Overtrade | Wait for setup |
| ”One more” | Blow account | Set daily limit |
Greed in Action
Profitable trade → "Let me make more" → Price reverses → Loss
The fix: Take profit as planned. Set targets and stick to them.
Overtrading
The most common killer of accounts.
Overtrading Signs
- Trading every day
- Multiple trades in session
- Trading noise, not setups
- Can’t watch without trading
Overtrading Solutions
| Solution | Implementation |
|---|---|
| Set max trades | 3 trades/day max |
| Wait for setup | Only your setup |
| Increase timeframe | Trade larger TF only |
| Remove charts | Close 2nd screen |
Daily Limit Rule
Max: 3-5 trades/day
Ideal: 1-2 trades/day
Good: 0 trades (no setup)
Revenge Trading
Trying to recover immediately after a loss.
Revenge Cycle
1. Lose trade
2. "I'll make it back"
3. Enter another trade
4. Larger size
5. Another loss
6. Account damaged
Revenge Solutions
| Rule | Action |
|---|---|
| After loss | Stop trading for the day |
| After 2 losses | Stop for the week |
| Never increase size | After loss |
| Walk away | Take a break |

Discipline Systems
Rule-Based Trading
1. Write rules
2. Review rules
3. Execute rules

5. Adjust rules (NOT between trades)
The 24-Hour Rule

Real Scenarios
Common Trader Mistakes
Scenario 1: The Chase
Problem: Price moving, no setup, FOMO kicks in.
Price: Up 50 pips since morning
Trader: Hasn't traded today
Feeling: "What if?"
Action: Enters at top
Result: Reverses, stop hit
Solution: If it’s not your setup, don’t trade. Miss the move.
Scenario 2: The Hold
Problem: Profitable trade turns into loss.
Entry: 1.1000 → Now 1.1050 (+50 pips)
Target: 1.1100
Price: Starts dropping
Trader: "It will come back"
Result: 1.0950 (-50 pips)
Solution: Trail stop or exit at break-even. Never let winner become loser.
Scenario 3: The Size-Up
Problem: After losing trade, double size to recover.
Trade 1: Lost $100 (-1%)
Trade 2: Size 2x, lost $200 (-2%)
Trade 3: Size 3x, lost $600 (-6%)
Result: Account damaged
Solution: Never increase size after loss. Always same % risk.
Scenario 4: The Hope
Problem: Trade going wrong, hope it recovers.
Trade: -50 pips
Stop: -100 pips
Action: Move stop to -150 pips
Result: -200 pips loss
Solution: Move stop in only. Accept loss and move on.
Scenario 5: The Boredom Trade
Problem: Nothing to trade, force a trade.
Market: No setup present
Action: Force trade on small signal
Result: Stopped out
Solution: No setup = No trade. Wait for setup or do nothing.
